Airbus A380’s Diverted London-Bound Airbus A380’s Diverted Across Europe Due To Storm Ciara - Simple Flying

In the UK as Storm Ciara makes its presence known, a number of airlines have been suffering from the impact of high winds this weekend. Gales of around 90mph have shaken even the largest of aircraft. As a result, on Sunday a number of A380s have been forced to divert due to Storm Ciara, landing in other parts of England and even backtracking to Europe.

Diversions across Europe

Whilst airlines like British Airways have decided to cancel some of their routes owing to Storm Ciara, other airlines around the world have made normal long-haul journeys and attempted to battle through the strong gusts. Not all have been successful.

Over recent days, a number of airlines have made attempts at landing in the UK only to find it impossible. One airline that has fared particularly badly is Emirates. It’s had two of its A380s divert whilst trying to land.

On 9th February 2020, an Airbus A380 registered as A6-EVD was making its way to London. The aircraft left Dubai International Airport at 07:40 local time (03:40 UTC) when it came into difficulties landing. The aircraft was expected to touch down in London Gatwick Airport at around 11:40 UTC however it was unable to. Flight Radar 24 shows the aircraft’s flight path circling London before flying backward, despite two attempts to land.

Flight EK15 was then diverted to Zurich in Switzerland, around 600 miles away in the wrong direction. Passengers were accommodated and a replacement flight will operate on 10th February 2020.

Services will resume after Sunday

Unfortunately, Emirates also suffered another diversion of its A380 on the same day. This involved a flight completing a route from Dubai to Manchester. This time, however, the aircraft was diverted to Frankfurt.

A spokesperson for Emirates told Simple Flying:

“Due to heavy winds caused by Storm Ciara, Emirates flight EK17 from Dubai to Manchester and flight EK15 from Dubai to London Gatwick on 9th February have been diverted to Frankfurt and Zurich, respectively. Due to adverse weather conditions and crew duty time limitations, EK17 and EK15 will continue the flight journey to Manchester and London Gatwick respectively, tomorrow. Affected passengers have been accommodated in hotels overnight. Emirates apologizes for any inconvenience caused but the safety of our passengers and crew is of the utmost importance.”

Qatar Airways also diverts out of London

However, Emirates was not alone in its failed A380 landings. Qatar Airways also diverted out of London after two failed attempts to land there.

On 9th February 2020, Qatar Airways flight QR3 left Hamad International Airport in Doha at 07:46 UTC en route to London Heathrow. However, as the A380 aircraft registered A7-APG neared the British capital, it was unable to land. It was scheduled to touch down in Heathrow at 12:04 UTC however it continued to fly north where it landed at Manchester Airport at 14:00 UTC.

It is not clear how passengers will reach their final destination, particularly since a lot of train lines have also been affected by Storm Ciara.

What’s the significance of the A380 diversions?

Of course, it’s not just A380s that have been diverted due to the severity of weather conditions around London and the whole of the UK at the moment. However, the diversion of A380s certainly is significant. It demonstrates just how powerful these storms are and how dangerous landing conditions are for even the largest of aircraft.

The fact that an aircraft with a fully-loaded weight of over 450,000 kg can be swayed by such winds is justification enough that other airlines are rightfully canceling some of their flights.

Other airlines and their widebody aircraft have been forced to divert in Europe after failed attempts at landing in London. A British Airways Boeing 777 registered G-YMMJ was flying to London but ultimately landed in Germany. The aircraft was operating flight BA196 from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to London Heathrow but was diverted to Frankfurt on 8th February 2020.

A LATAM flight from Sao Paulo in Brazil to London Heathrow was also diverted due to Storm Ciara. The Boeing 777 operating flight LA8084 headed to Barcelona, Spain after two failed attempts at landing in London.

The outlook for the next couple of days

Hundreds of flights have already been canceled as the worst of Storm Ciara hits the UK. Despite the devastation it has already caused, the storm is not expected to last for long. Weather warnings will stay until Tuesday 11th February 2020 but the storm could continue to wreak havoc in other parts of Europe. Perhaps those favors that London called in will soon need returning.

With Help From A Storm, A British Airways 747 Just Broke The Subsonic Trans-Atlantic Record - Jalopnik

As Storm Ciara causes flooding and transportation delays across Britain, at least some are finding the weather rather agreeable as the winds from the storm helped British Airways flight BA112 cross the Atlantic in a record time of four hours and 56 minutes.

According to plane-tracking website FlightRadar, the Boeing 747-436 departed John F. Kennedy International Airport at 6:21 PM New York time last night and arrived more than 80 minutes ahead of schedule in Heathrow at 4:47 AM GMT.

Helping the 747 make its way from New York to London in record time was a jetstream moving at speeds in excess of 260 mph. These unusually fast winds are attributed to the same storm system currently battering the British Isles.

Flight BA112 bests the previous record between JFK and Gatwick, London’s other major airport, of five hours and thirteen minutes set around this time last year by a Norwegian 787-9 under similar strong tailwind conditions. That plane managed a top speed of 776 mph, shy of the 801 mph that the British Airways 747 hit last night.

According to the BBC, though the top speed reached by the plane on its journey across the Atlantic was greater than the speed of sound, it wouldn’t have broken the sound barrier as the differential between the speed of the plane and the air moving around it was to low.

While this flight certainly was speedy, it should be noted that the four hours and 56 minute flight time is well short of the outright commercial airliner record set by the Concorde back in 1996. Hitting 1,350 mph, that plane managed to make the crossing in two hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds.

Though the speed of this particular flight is largely attributable to the wind conditions, the chances that more trans-Atlantic flights will be able to manage similarly impressive speeds are growling slimmer. Airlines around the world (including British Airways) are retiring their 747s as fuel efficiency considerations are leading a transition to more miserly two-engine designs like the 787 and Airbus A350. Still, the previous record-holder before flight BA 112 was a two-engined 787 so perhaps there still is hope for an even shorter sub-sonic hop from North America to Europe to come.

Kuo details coronavirus impact on iPhone 9 and iPhone 12 production, Foxconn uncertainty - 9to5Mac

Local Chinese authorities are refuting a report from yesterday, which said that they had told Foxconn it that could not open its iPhone production factories on February 10 like previously scheduled. Reuters reports today that Shenzhen authorities are still conducting checks and have yet to make a final decision. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is also out today with a new investor note detailing the effect of coronavirus on Apple’s production.

Yesterday’s report came from Nikkei and claimed that public health experts had conducted inspections at Foxconn factories, determining that there was a “high risk of coronavirus infection” at the facilities. This made the facilities unsuitable for a production restart, the report claimed.

In a statement posted to WeChat today, however, Shenzhen’s Longhua district explained that the Nikkei report is untrue and that no final decision has been made. According to the statement, public health experts are still conducting checks at Foxconn facilities. Once each facility is cleared, the company will be able to restart production.

The thousands of workers that work in Foxconn’s factories will need to wear masks, undergo temperature checks, and adhere to a dining system considered safe, it said in the statement. “We will announce to the public the company’s production resumption situation in a timely manner,” it added.

Foxconn, however, appears to be banking on local authorities giving it the go-ahead to resume production. Reuters cites a “source familiar with the matter” and says that “tens of thousands of workers” have already returned to the area and are waiting to restart production work on February 10.

In a statement this morning, Foxconn reiterated that it is waiting to receive recommendations from local authorities before moving ahead. “We have not received any requests from our customers on the need to resume production earlier (than the local governments’ recommendations),” the company told Reuters.

If the halt extends into a second week, Foxconn could see a “big” production impact, according to Reuters, which would also affect Apple. For its part, Apple has said that its “first priority is the well-being of our teams, supplier partners and customers across China.” Apple Stores in China are currently scheduled to reopen on February 15.

Meanwhile, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out with a new investor note today. Kuo says that Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant is the most critical iPhone production site, focused on the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2/iPhone 9. This plant was scheduled to resume work on February 2nd, but has since been delayed by at least one week.

The Shenzhen Foxconn plant is in charge of development of the 2020 iPhones, and Kuo says the development team did not stop work for the Chinese New Year holidays. The rest of the plant was scheduled to come back on February 10, but Kuo says that has been posted for at least another week.

Meanwhile, Pegatron’s Shanghai plant, which is in charge of iPhone 11 production and new 2020 iPhone development, resumed work on February 3. Pegatron’s Kushan plant is in charge of iPhone 9 production and was scheduled to resume work on February 10, but that has been delayed by “at least several days.”

Kuo stops short of making any actual shipment predictions in this investor note because “there are still many uncertainties.” He does warn, however, that there are risks of new product shipment delays and lower-than-expected iPhone sales due to the coronavirus outbreak.

British Airways may have set record for fastest subsonic flight from New York to London - Fox News

If only all flights across the Atlantic could go this fast.

Favorable weather conditions may have helped British Airways set a new world record. One of their flights flew from New York to London in under five hours, possibly making it the fastest flight of its kind.

British Airways confirmed to Fox News that their flight BA112, which was scheduled to land in London at 6:25 a.m., actually landed at 4:43 a.m. They also confirmed the total flight was estimated to be 4-hours-and-56-minutes long.

If this is accurate, it could make the trip a world record for the fast subsonic flight from New York to London.

BRITISH AIRWAYS SUSPENDS ALL FLIGHTS TO CHINA AMID CORONAVIRUS FEARS

Weather conditions likely played a role in the flight’s increased speed. According to Weather.com, the jet stream saw winds greater than 200 mph. this weekend. As the flights travel at the same level as the jet stream (about 30,000 feet in the air), this could have helped shave time off the flight, which typically takes 6 hours and 13 minutes to complete.

The news outlet reports that some commercial flights were recorded as traveling at speeds of over 800 m.p.h. through the jet stream this weekend.

In a statement obtained by Fox News, a spokesperson for British Airways said, “We always prioritize safety over speed records, but our highly trained pilots made the most of the conditions to get customers back to London well ahead of time.”

Here are some absurd facts about pizza on National Pizza Day - CNN

(CNN) — The time has come to wrap yourself in the warm, gooey embrace of cheese, settle into a heavenly array of toppings, and chomp down on some comforting crust. It's National Pizza Day.

Now, that's not to be confused with National Cheese Pizza Day (September 5), National Pepperoni Pizza Day (September 20), National Pizza Month (October) and National Sausage Pizza Day (October 11), but boy, does this nation love pizza.

Here are some absurd pizza facts to fuel your month of munching.

It might be addictive

The seemingly harmful pizza pie was ranked as the food most associated with addictive-like eating behaviors, according to a study. Its delicious combination of fat and carbohydrates, along with its texture, color, and complimentary taste profile make it so appealing.

Artificial Intelligence is coming for your slice

Pizza is just the beginning, though. If a computer can figure out how to properly layer the ingredients of a pizza, it may be able to better understand how to construct other foods, or eventually be able to layer clothes into an outfit, project leader Dimitrios Papadopoulos told CNN Business.

Pizza has been a tool of military intelligence

In the late '60s, the US Army's 113th Military Intelligence unit used the tastiest trick in their book -- fake pizza deliveries -- to spy on reporters and politicians, according to The New Yorker.

People love setting pizza records

Guinness World Records has recorded an seemingly endless list of pizza records. Here are just a few:

Most expensive pizza commercially available: Topped with white Stilton cheese, French foie gras and truffles, two types of caviar, and 24-karat gold leaves, all on a bed of black squid ink dough, this pizza will cost you $2,700. If you're in the market for a pile of money in the shape of a pizza, this delicacy can be found at Industry Kitchen in New York.
Highest altitude pizza delivery on land: Good news! If you can make it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, you might be able to convince Pizza Hut to deliver a victory meal to you. They've done it before, after all.
In 2016, the General Manager of Pizza Hut Africa, Randall Blackford, and a group of employees, led by experienced guides, trekked to the summit of Kilimanjaro with a pepperoni pizza in tow.

The feat was undertaken to mark the opening of the first Pizza Hut in Tanzania and the 100th country in which the company had launched a restaurant.

A version of this piece appeared in October 2019 for National Pizza Month

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos finds new ways to spend money - Quartz

From our Obsession

Looking at Big Tech as the next Big Oil.

Asked nearly two years ago what he might do with his considerable wealth, the world’s richest person Jeff Bezos said “space travel” was his only option.

“The only way that I can see to deploy this much financial resource is by converting my Amazon winnings into space travel,” the Amazon founder said, adding that he was “liquidating” about $1 billion a year in Amazon stock to fund his space business, Blue Origin. “That is basically it.”

But space travel might not be enough for Bezos these days. Over the past week, he unloaded roughly $4 billion of stock as Amazon’s market cap closed above $1 trillion for the first time, Bloomberg reported. That brings Bezos’s total stock sales to more than $14 billion, mostly over the past four years. His net worth is estimated at $127 billion, or roughly 2 million times the median US household income.

What to do with all that wealth? Even with $1 billion or so into Blue Origin a year, Bezos is still positively swimming in cash. So the ultimate billionaire is figuring out new ways to deploy some of those financial resources.

For instance, property. Bezos and girlfriend Lauren Sanchez are reportedly mega-mansion hunting in Bel Air and Beverly Hills, and considering a 40,000-sq-ft property listed for $225 million. Last year, Bezos bought three condos in Manhattan for a combined $80 million a few months after Amazon backed out of its deal for a second headquarters with New York City.

Also, art. According to an art dealer’s newsletter, Bezos bought two works of art last November: Hurting the Word Radio #2 by Ed Ruscha at Christie’s for $52.5 million and Vignette 19 by Kerry James Marshall at Sotheby’s for $18.5 million.

Of course, with the stock he liquified just last week, Bezos could invest $1 billion into Blue Origin for the year, buy four $225 million mega-mansions, 20 more works of art averaging $50 million each, and still have more than $1 billion to spare. How else could a man so rich possibly convert those Amazon winnings? Certainly not philanthropy.
