How the market has performed a year after the worst Christmas Eve plunge in history - MarketWatch

What a difference a year makes.

For some investors on Wall Street at this time last year it was a Nightmare before Christmas, as an escalating U.S. - China trade war and Federal Reserve interest rate hikes cast a pall over the holiday.

Since that low point on Christmas Eve last year though, as in Tim Burton’s movie, Santa has replaced the Pumpkin King’s nightmarish 2018 gifts with a spectacular recovery.

On Christmas Eve last year, the S&P 500 index had fallen nearly 20% for the year and was on the verge of a bear market.

Here’s what that action looked like last year (see chart below):

But this year’s rally has seen the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.02% recover and return 37% when the market closed for Christmas Eve on Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.13% is up 31% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.08%  has surged more than 45% over the same period, according to FactSet data.

“So, a year later, what was the bigger surprise? The 2018 fourth quarter massacre or the monstrous rally from those lows?” asked Frank Cappelleri, executive director at brokerage Instinet.

The S&P 500 has not seen a 1% loss on any day since Oct. 8 but it also hasn’t seen a 1% climb since October either, Cappelleri notes (see chart below):

He said the gains that the market has enjoyed in the fourth quarter this year have been more in line with returns historically, with an average return in the last three months of a calendar year of 7.86%, not including 2019. The average return for 2019 so far is 8.66%:

Although at least one expert believes the market is currently in a “silly season”, others believe that equity indexes could continue to climb higher into next year, despite lackluster corporate earnings.

While the percentage of companies in the S&P 500 index trading above their 200-day moving average has climbed to the highest level in nearly two years, further gains could be ahead, wrote Jeff DeGraaf, chairman of Renaissance Macro Research, in a Tuesday research note.

“The strength in long-term internal trends not only signifies an improving market but helps build a more sustainable backdrop as levels of technical support strengthen and multiply, creating more reasons to buy dips,” wrote DeGraaf. The chart below shows the gains in the equal-weighted S&P 500 atop a chart showing the percent of companies trading above their long-term averages:

As when it comes to economic fundamentals, better clarity on U.S. international trade policy may help drive increased business spending and more productivity, which we think will lead to stronger earnings growth in 2020, argued John Lynch, Chief Investment Strategist for LPL Financial, in a note on Tuesday.

“In 2019, expanding valuations drove gains for stocks, but in 2020, we expect earnings to do the heavy lifting,”

“We are encouraged by the additional clarity companies now have as a result of the trade pact reached with China December 13,” he said.

A Last-Minute Christmas Shopping List for Sports Fans - Sports Illustrated

It’s a special Christmas-themed edition of Hot Clicks!
A Dallas Cowboys fan holds a sign at Rams game

It’s Christmas Eve and you know what that means. It’s time for people to scramble to pick gifts for the hard-to-shop-for people in their lives. It’s also time for sportswriters who don’t feel like working on Christmas Eve to use that scenario to write an edition of their column not tied to the news cycle.

I don’t expect anyone reading this will actually know an MLB owner or Jason Garrett much less know them well enough to be exchanging Christmas gifts, but it’s a good vehicle to make some jokes about sports, so I’m going to roll with it.

An MLB owner
Several million dollars

Despite record revenues, MLB owners always seem hard-up for cash these days. If you happen to know Red Sox owner John Henry, see if you can find $10-20 million stuck in your couch cushions to give him so he doesn’t have to trade Mookie Betts.

Your distraught Alabama fan friend
A ski trip

Sure, Bama fans are beside themselves now that the Tide will miss the College Football Playoff for the first time ever. But you can show the Alabama fan in your life that there are other ways to spend weekends in early January by gifting them a getaway to the great outdoors.

Your Astros fan friend
“The Imitation Game” on DVD

Hey, it’s a great movie. Nominated for a bunch of Oscars. Yeah, it’s about decoding secret signals. So what? Don’t read too much into it.

The guy in your fantasy league who won’t shut up about drafting Lamar Jackson
A crystal ball

Oh, so you’re so good at predicting the future, huh? You knew Jackson was going to be an MVP candidate? Look in here and give me tomorrow’s lottery numbers.

Carmelo Anthony
Nothing (for now)

If his late arrival in Portland is any indication, Melo will be just fine if you wait until about three weeks into the holiday season to give him something.

Jason Garrett
A new set of golf clubs

The Cowboys coach is going to have a lot of free time on his hands pretty soon. If his team is able to sneak into the playoffs at 8–8 (which would require a Giants win over the Eagles and a Dallas win against Washington) he may receive a stay of execution until after the Wild Card round, but odds are he’ll be freshly unemployed on Dec. 30 and he’ll need a hobby to keep him occupied until ESPN hires him in the fall.

Freddie Kitchens
A nice, plain shirt

The Browns coach sure caused a stir with his “Pittsburgh Started It” shirt before Cleveland fell to the Steelers. Maybe Freddie should keep it simple from now on. Plaid is a good, safe bet.

Your Warriors fan friend
The college hoops package on their cable provider

Well, this season is already over for the formerly dynastic Golden State squad. Now that the Warriors look like they’ll be picking in the lottery this June for the first time since 2012, it’s time for fans to get familiar with the college game.

Stocking stuffers

How a Ukrainian folk tune became a Christmas classic. ... A dying Canadian teen will get to meet LeBron James at the Raptors-Lakers game on Christmas. ... Because of the fire in April, there will be no Christmas mass at Paris’s Notre Dame for the first time since 1803.

Here’s the NBA’s promo for its Christmas Day slate

Too cute

How have I never learned this before?

This Mets video is an acid trip

Well damn, it does

Jingle Bells on wrenches

Travis Kalanick to depart Uber's board of directors - CNBC

Uber said Tuesday that Travis Kalanick, its former CEO, will step down from the company's board of directors effective Dec. 31.

In a statement, Uber said Kalanick is leaving the board to "focus on his new business and philanthropic endeavors." Kalanick is launching latest venture, CloudKitchens, which rents out space to restaurateurs for delivery-based businesses.

Kalanick was ousted from Uber in 2017 over concerns he had fostered an unhealthy workplace environment, but he still remained on Uber's board. He was present at the New York Stock Exchange during the company's IPO in May, though not on the dais with company executives. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in the release that he was "enormously grateful for Travis' vision and tenacity while building Uber."

"Uber has been a part of my life for the past 10 years," Kalanick said in the release. "At the close of the decade, and with the company now public, it seems like the right moment for me to focus on my current business and philanthropic pursuits. I'm proud of all that Uber has achieved, and I will continue to cheer for its future from the sidelines. I want to thank the board, Dara and the entire Uber team for everything they have done to further the Uber mission."

Kalanick's departure from the board comes as he has dumped practically all of his stake in Uber since the company's lockup expired in November. He has sold more than $2.5 billion worth of Uber stock, leaving him with roughly 5.8 million shares remaining, or less than 10% of his holdings, according to SEC filings. At the current pace, he'll likely be completely divested from Uber within days.

Shares of Uber were up as much as 1.1% in early trading on Tuesday.
