Wendy's Is Hiring 20K New Workers - Newser

(Newser) – Wendy's plans to roll out breakfast offerings like the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and the Breakfast Baconator at all 6,000 or so of its US restaurants next year—and it needs 20,000 new employees to serve them. The fast food chain currently serves breakfast at around 300 locations. CEO Todd Penegor said Monday that the breakfast will provide "incredible growth opportunities," but the launch won't be cheap, CNN reports. The company, which plans to spend around $20 million on the breakfast expansion, has lowered its financial outlook for 2019. USA Today notes that Wendy's was a holdout while other chains expanded their morning menus, although it did experiment with a nationwide breakfast menu including items like French toast and omelets in the mid-1980s. Saudi Aramco CEO confirms IPO will have a secondary listing, locations under review - CNBC

ABU DHABI — Saudi Aramco, the world's biggest oil company, is prepared for a listing on the kingdom's stock exchange and it will take place 'very soon,' its CEO said Tuesday.

"What we have always said is that Aramco is ready for listing whenever the shareholders make a decision to list," Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser told reporters at the World Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi.

"And as you heard from His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz yesterday, it is going to be very soon. So, we are ready — that is the bottom line."

Nasser also confirmed Aramco's aims to list internationally in addition to Saudi Arabia, though did not specify which other locations are under consideration.

"The primary listing is to list locally but we are ready also for listing outside in other districts," Nasser told CNBC's Dan Murphy at the World Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi.

When asked whether he would prefer to see Aramco list in Tokyo, Japan, he replied: "We are ready to list wherever shareholders decide."

The oil giant has delayed its IPO, originally scheduled for 2018, reportedly over Saudi concerns about public scrutiny over its finances and because of the complexity of its corporate structure.

Speaking on Monday, new Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman underlined the importance of regulation for Saudi Aramco, as it gears up for a long-anticipated IPO.

"I have no doubt in my mind that emphasizing the separation between Aramco, the corporate, and the ministry as regulator is a must," he told CNBC contributor Helima Croft at an audience of delegates.

"The regulator cannot be a person, the regulator has to be an institution. That regulator role has to be defined, and the contours of the role of the regulator has to be understood," he added.

2020 VW ID.3 Videos Show Brand's 'Third Most Important Car' Ever - Motor1.com

VW wants the electric hatchback to have the same impact as the Beetle and Golf.

Hot on the heels of last night’s big debut, the 2020 Volkswagen ID.3 is being featured in a series of videos putting the spotlight on what the company argues is its third most important car after the Beetle and Golf. The compact five-door hatchback adopts a new design language reserved for the upcoming ID family of pure electric models, ushering in a fresh visual identity to separate the EVs from the conventionally powered VWs.

'

It’s rarely a case when an automaker correctly uses the term “all-new,” but the ID.3 was truly developed from the ground up. Even the oh-so-familiar VW logo has a mildly updated look to signal the wave of the future as Wolfsburg is heavily investing in electric vehicles to make us forget about the Dieselgate ordeal. This zero-emissions hatch has just about the size of a Golf and is just the tip of the iceberg, with a whole fleet of ID cars planned for production in the next decade.

Looks may be subjective, but there’s no denying the ID.3 stands out among the ICE-powered cars offered by the VW core brand. The exterior represents a significant departure from the e-Golf it replaces, while the minimalist interior is also a first for the German brand. In case you haven’t noticed already, “pause” and “play” logos have been embedded into the brake and accelerator pedals, respectively.

'

The adjacent videos are showing not only the regular ID.3, but also the upscale limited-run launch edition for which VW has already received 30,000 preorders. It comes with the mid-range 58-kWh battery and offers 201 hp (150 kW) of power, with an instant torque of 310 Newton-meters (229 pound-feet) channeled to the rear wheels.

Carrying a starting price of under €40,000 in Europe, the ID.3 1st is going to be offered in three fixed configurations, with the range topper being a “Max” version featuring everything from a head-up display and Beats sound system to a panoramic sliding roof and 20-inch wheels.

Production of the 2020 VW ID.3 will commence in November, but the first customer deliveries won't be made until next summer.

Nearly all British Airways flights canceled as pilots go on strike - CNN

The strike was called by the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) amid a heated dispute over pay with the airline.
Nearly 200,000 passengers were due to travel on September 9 and 10, a BA spokesperson told CNN Business.

Why the strike?

Pilots are unhappy with BA's offer of an 11.5% salary increase over three years. They want a greater share of the airline's profit.
Pilots had put forward "detailed proposals" in November 2018 for a profit sharing arrangement that would apply to all airline staff, BALPA general secretary Brian Strutton told the BBC on Monday. Having "shared in the pain" when BA went through bad times, pilots wanted a "fair share" of the profit, Strutton said.
This would be up to 7% of pay in good times and zero when times were tough, he said. It would not involve an increase in base pay.
BA said other labor unions, representing nearly 90% of all BA staff, including engineers, cabin crew and ground staff, had accepted the 11.5% increase.
"The average salary for a BA Captain is £167,000 [$206,000] plus flying allowances. The offer of 11.5% would take the average salary to £202,000," a BA spokesperson said. A first officer earns £90,000 on average, the spokesperson said.

What it means for passengers

Passengers due to fly on September 9 and 10 are highly unlikely to be able to travel as planned. The airline advised them not to go to the airport.
BA said it would offer "as many customers as possible" — including those connecting from flights with other airlines — the option to rebook on other airlines, or have their flights refunded.
Knock-on effects were expected to cause some disruption to flights later this week, a spokesperson said.
BALPA is planning another strike for September 27. The airline said it would contact passengers traveling on that date if their flight is likely to be impacted.
Passengers should keep checking the BA website for updates.

What it means for BA

The cost of the strike would be around £40 million ($49 million) per day, according to BALPA. The three strike days already scheduled would cost in the region of £120 million ($148 million).
The airline said it was forced to cancel so many flights because "with no detail from BALPA on which pilots would strike, we had no way of predicting how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly."
Members of the pilots union voted 93% in favor of a strike in July. BALPA said last week that it would be willing to call it off if British Airways returned to the negotiating table.

China Labor Watch reports more labor violatio... - Taiwan News

File photo

File photo (By Associated Press)

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The labor rights group China Labor Watch (CLW) published a report on Sunday (Sept. 8) detailing labor violations at a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou that manufactures products for the Apple corporation.

The facility is called “iPhone City” and is reportedly the largest iPhone factory in the world, supplying half of the iPhones sold worldwide. CLW conducted an investigation of labor conditions at the factory over a four year period and found that Foxconn and Apple are responsible for some significant abuses of the Chinese laborers.

According to the CLW report, the factory has used dispatch workers as well as student workers in excess of the legal limit to ensure orders are met during peak season. The company has also allegedly withheld promised bonuses and made use of overtime work opportunities in an illegal reward/ punishment scheme as a means to entice employees into recruiting new workers.

The report says that Foxconn has become increasingly reliant on dispatch labor to make up for a diminished labor force. The Zhengzhou factory workforce is made up of nearly 50 percent dispatch laborers. The report also accuses the Apple Corporation of transferring its increasing costs as a result of the U.S. –China trade war onto the factory laborers in China. From the report’s Executive Summary:

“Recent findings on working conditions at Zhengzhou Foxconn highlights several issues which are in violation of Apple’s own code of conduct. Apple has the responsibility and capacity to make fundamental improvements to the working conditions along its supply chain, however, Apple is now transferring costs from the trade war through their suppliers to workers and profiting from the exploitation of Chinese workers.”

Foxconn was recently criticized by CLW for labor rights violations at a factory in Hengyang, China which manufactures products for Amazon. A list of reported labor rights violations perpetrated by managers at the Zhengzhou factory and the Apple Corporation, along with the complete report, can be found at China Labor Watch’s website.

Update: Foxconn and Apple have reportedly acknowledged some of the violations outlined by CLW.

British Airways' cargo operations grounded as strike goes ahead - Air Cargo News

There is major disruption to British Airways’ bellyhold cargo operations as the airline’s pilots carry out strike action today and tomorrow.

The strike is the result of an ongoing dispute about pay between British Airways and the pilots’ union BALPA.

The industrial action is the largest ever carried out by British airways with some 1,700 passenger flights being cancelled, thereby grounding bellyhold cargo, which is managed by IAG Cargo.

A statement released today by British Airways, explained: “Unfortunately, with no detail from BALPA on which pilots would strike, we had no way of predicting how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly, so we had no option but to cancel nearly 100 per cent our flights.

“We remain ready and willing to return to talks with BALPA.”

Another statement released by IAG Cargo last week said: “BALPA’s unjustifiable strike action does affect parts of our cargo operations.

“Our British Airways schedules have been updated and are now reflected on ba.com. We are working on limiting the operational impact this unacceptable action will have, and we will continue to keep customers updated with the latest information.”

If the dispute is not resolved in future talks – which are as yet unplanned – between British Airways and BALPA, then pilots plan to strike again on September 27.

Nearly all British Airways flights canceled as pilots go on strike - CNN

The strike was called for by the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) amid a heated dispute over pay with the airline.
BALPA said Sunday on Twitter that it put forward a proposal to the carrier's management Wednesday, but had yet to receive a reply.
British Airways said in a statement posted Monday it remains "ready and willing to return to talks with BALPA."
The airline said it was forced to cancel so many flights because "with no detail from BALPA on which pilots would strike, we had no way of predicting how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly."
Customers who had flights booked for Monday and Tuesday will likely "not be able to travel as planned," British Airways said. The airline also advised customers not to go to the airport.
Members of the pilots union voted 93% in favor of a strike in July. BALPA said last week that it would be willing to call it off if British Airways returned to the negotiating table.
According to its website, BALPA represents more than 10,000 pilots in the United Kingdom — more than 85% of all commercial pilots who fly there.
The pilot's union also intends to strike September 27. British Airways said Monday that it will be in contact "in the next few weeks" to let customers who are traveling on or around that date know if they are affected.
While the union is calling for higher wages, British Airways has said its offer of an 11.5% increase over three years "fair" and above the United Kingdom's current rate of inflation. In a statement released last month, it said the strike could "destroy the travel plans of tens of thousands of our customers." It called the strike "a reckless course of action."
