The screen on Sheryl Crow's Tesla goes black, Elon Musk saves the day - Mashable

What do you do when your Tesla's screen goes black? Well, you take it to Twitter and have Elon Musk solve the problem for you, of course.

It probably also helps if you're famous.

On Wednesday, Sheryl Crow queried the Twitterverse about her Tesla's screen misbehaving.

"Help! Who knows what to do when your @Tesla screen goes black and the reset doesn’t work? Return it and get your money back??," she tweeted.

It does sound like a nasty problem, but it's actually quite easy to solve. According to Musk, Tesla's Night mode, when brightness is at 0 percent, is too dark during the day, and the company will update the software to remedy this. For now, the solution is to change your screen preference from Night mode to auto, sayeth Musk.

Musk also later tweeted the company would also tweak Night mode default brightness, which is currently "too high."

Although it's unclear who gave her the right advice, Crow later tweeted that she managed to solve the problems by changing the car's settings.

And if you're wondering whether she's really selling her Tesla, the answer is no.

Endings don't get any better than this.

Tesla sales drop off sharply following record holiday season - Engadget

shaunl via Getty Images

In the first quarter of 2019, Tesla manufactured a total of 77,100 vehicles but was only able to deliver 63,000 in the three months that ended in March. While that's double the number it was able to deliver in the same quarter last year, that's down 31 percent from Tesla's deliveries (90,966 vehicles) in Q4 2018. As CNN Business noted, it's the biggest sales drop in the company's history if you only count deliveries and not reservations as sales. Analysts thought Tesla would be able to deliver 76,000 cars for the quarter.

The 77,100 vehicles the automaker manufacturer are composed of 62,950 Model 3 and 14,150 Model S and X cars. Among those, Tesla was able to deliver 50,900 Model 3 and 12,100 Model S and X vehicles. In its announcement, Tesla admits that it expects its income for the quarter to be negatively impacted by the lower-than-expected delivery volumes. The recent price adjustments it implement would affect its numbers, as well. Tesla slashed the prices of its cars in recent months -- in Model 3's case, it now costs $35,000 after incentives.

Although there are apparently deepening concerns about a drop in demand for its EVs, there are other several explanations for the company's lackluster quarter. To start with, it rushed to deliver Model 3 cars last year to enable buyers to take advantage of its $7,500 tax credit, thereby beefing up its numbers for the last period of the year. And then there's the fact that Tesla has only just started selling cars in China and Europe. It apparently encountered new challenges that come with delivering orders overseas.

Tesla seems optimistic for the second quarter and the rest of 2019, however. It says "a large number of vehicle deliveries [will] shift to the second quarter" due to delays during the first. Also, it still expects to fulfill 360,000 to 400,000 vehicle deliveries this year, revealing that "US orders for Model 3 vehicles significantly outpaced what [it was] able to deliver" in the first three months of the year.

Hundreds of millions of Facebook records exposed on Amazon cloud servers - CNN

Two third-party Facebook app developers were found to have stored user data on Amazon's servers in a way that allowed it to be downloaded by the public, according to a report from UpGuard, a cybersecurity firm.
One of the companies stored 146 gigabytes of data containing more than 540 million records, including comments, likes, reactions and account names, on the Amazon servers, according to UpGuard. The number of users whose data was included is not yet clear.
Another app is said to have stored unprotected Facebook passwords for 22,000 users.
Chris Vickery, the director of cyber risk research at UpGuard, told CNN Business that the find "highlights a problem that is intrinsic with mass data collection."
Vickery said that the data appeared to have been gathered through a Facebook integration. Facebook allows third party developers to integrate apps and websites with its platform to allow for functionality like signing into a service using Facebook.
Facebook has "no way of guaranteeing the safe storage of the data of their end users if they are going to allow app developers to harvest it in mass," Vickery said.
In a statement provided to CNN Business, a Facebook spokesperson said, "Facebook's policies prohibit storing Facebook information in a public database. Once alerted to the issue, we worked with Amazon to take down the databases. We are committed to working with the developers on our platform to protect people's data."
Representatives for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Bloomberg was first to report the news.
The new finding is the latest to highlight Facebook's struggle to protect the data collected from its more than 2 billion users. It may only increase scrutiny on the company after a year of data privacy scandals.
Last March, news broke that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to Donald Trump's presidential campaign, accessed information from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge.
Facebook has said the data was initially collected by a professor for academic purposes in line with its rules. The information was later transferred to third parties, including Cambridge Analytica, in violation of Facebook's policies, Facebook has said.
Since then, Facebook has come under scrutiny for offering more of its users' data to companies than it had previously admitted. Last year, the company also revealed that attackers exploited a bug on the platform to expose the information of nearly 50 million users.
Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have sharply criticized the company's data privacy practices. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is said to be looking to levy a record fine against the company for violating an earlier data privacy agreement. In October, UK authorities hit Facebook with a £500,000 fine, the maximum possible, over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Verizon has turned on its superfast 5G mobile network in 2 cities, and there's actually a phone you can buy right now to use with it - INSIDER

  • Verizon on Wednesday turned on its mobile 5G network, promising significantly faster speeds than the 4G LTE networks we've been using so far.
  • For now, only one phone can connect to Verizon's 5G network: the Motorola Moto Z3, which needs a "Moto Mod" attachment to connect to it.
  • The only other 5G-compatible phone expected to arrive in the US soon is the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which is scheduled to arrive in the first half of this year as a temporary exclusive to Verizon.
  • AT&T has already activated its own 5G network, but there are no phones that support it yet.

Verizon has officially turned on its mobile 5G network in Minneapolis and Chicago.

Verizon promises that its 5G network delivers speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. Those speeds are significantly faster than those of the 4G LTE network we've most recently been using to browse the web, stream videos and music, and lurk on social media.

To put Verizon's 5G speed claim into perspective, I'm lucky to get about 20 megabits per second — 2% the speed of 1 gigabit per second — on Verizon's 4G LTE network in and around New York City.

For now, the only phone that can connect to Verizon's fifth-generation network in Minneapolis and Chicago is the $480 Motorola Moto Z3, which requires a separate $350 5G "Moto Mod" that attaches to the back of the Z3 smartphone to let the phone connect to Verizon's 5G network.

Motorola

Verizon is selling the Moto Z3 for a discounted $240 and the 5G modification for a discounted $200. Verizon says the 5G mod for the Z3 will be available to buy starting Wednesday.

More 5G-capable smartphones are expected later this year. The $1,200 Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is set to arrive in the first half of 2019 as a Verizon exclusive. It's expected to be available on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint in the second half of 2019.

AT&T has an active 5G network in 12 cities that it calls "5G Plus," which is supposedly faster than AT&T's regular 5G network, which hasn't yet rolled out. AT&T's 5G and 5G Plus shouldn't be confused with its "5G E" network, which is simply a renamed version of its 4G LTE Advanced Pro network that most recent smartphones can connect to.

Unfortunately for AT&T customers, AT&T doesn't yet sell a phone that can actually connect to its 5G Plus network. That's set to change when the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is made available to AT&T customers.

5G network availability from T-Mobile and Sprint is still vague.

Verizon begins deploying 5G mobile network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis - The Verge

Verizon today announced that it has officially deployed its 5G mobile service in certain parts of Chicago and Minneapolis, which are the first two of 30 cities where it plans to bring its 5G wireless network this year. The surprise launch is one week earlier than the date the company initially announced, with the company noting that customers can expect average download speeds of 450 Mbps, and peak speeds could reach “nearly 1 Gbps.”

To use Verizon’s 5G network, customers will need a 5G-ready phone. At the moment, that comes down to just the Moto Z3 that it launched last summer paired with the 5G Moto Mod, which is available today. It will also cost customers an additional $10 a month to use the 5G network. Verizon will support 5G on the new Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which is expected to launch in the “first half of 2019.” (Put differently, it should arrive sometime in the next two months.)

Today’s launch is different than Verizon’s previous 5G home network deployment in four cities last year. Whereas those networks run on the 5G TF standard, Verizon’s wireless 5G uses the “real” 5G NR standard for cellular networks.

Even if you’re in Chicago or Minneapolis, the launch is still extremely limited. Coverage span the general downtown areas and certain landmarks, like Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium and Chicago neighborhoods Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town.
